A Lifelong Dedication to Musical Excellence
Joyce Todd McBride is a pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and teacher whose work spans jazz, choral, instrumental, and musical theater. She is the founding director of the San Francisco vocal ensemble Conspiracy of Venus, for which she has created over 50 arrangements of works by artists from from Bjork to Duke Ellington. Her recent album, The Night-time Violets Bloom, features original compositions for jazz ensemble and has been described as eclectic, emotional, edgy, and deeply original.
Joyce has composed two musicals, multiple choral pieces, songs, and instrumental works. She has performed throughout the Bay Area with ensembles such as Dream Kitchen, Mixus Mundi, McBride Pera Starkweather, Calitropia, Volti, and the medieval group HelioTrope. Her music has been heard at beloved venues including Piedmont Piano, Freight and Salvage, Bird and Beckett, Red Poppy Art House, Swedish American Hall, and the Great American Music Hall.

Rooted in Berkeley, California, Joyce Todd McBride drew early inspiration from the Bay Area’s vibrant musical community and natural surroundings. Her formal education in music spans several esteemed institutions—UC Santa Cruz, the University of Sussex, the University of Pennsylvania, and Mills College, where she completed an M.A. in Composition. This rigorous and diverse academic journey shaped her singular voice as a composer, arranger, and educator, grounding her artistry in both tradition and innovation. Joyce is also a proud member of the Music Teacher’s Association of California (MTAC), reflecting her commitment to excellence in music education.
